NOTE: All files are - to my knowledge -  the latest versions available. If you know of a later version, please let me know. I'd also like to know about any new tools that you think are worthwhile, and I'll definitely try them out. Please report any broken links.  *Updated 11.09.04

*Doom Builder v1.64 by Pascal vd Heiden. Terrific Windows editor with an unbelievably handy feature: an in-level 3D previewer. You can move through the level much like one moves through the 3D windows in Quake editors (such as QERadiant). With hot keys you can align textures, change the heights of floors and ceilings, change the light level, and change textures and flats altogether (with a mouse-press a texture or flat preview window comes up that you can scroll through and select textures). The 3D preview mode is actually more similar to the one in the old BUILD editor for DUKE NUKEM 3D. I've only recently discovered this Freeware editor, and I think it's the best around.  Elegant and highly intuitive interface.  Supports ZDOOM, JDOOM, Legacy DOOM, BOOM, HERETIC, HEXEN, FINAL DOOM, and more. (BUILDER_ SETUP. EXE is the full install; BUILDER_SETUP.ZIP contains only the updated files and works for v1.xx up.) Updated 11.09.04.

*Doom Builder: An Illustrated Guide Version 1.2 by John W. Anderson. The manual is 135 pages long and has three sections: the first covers the DB interface, the second is a step-by-step walkthrough building a level and explaining the mouse clicks and keyboard shortcuts, and the third covers advanced functions. Fully illustrated with over a hundred screenshots. Viewable online in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Download Adobe Acrobat.  Self-extracting archives. Updated 07.27.04.

XWE (eXtendable WAD Editor) v1.12 by Csabo. Rather incredible Windows tool for editing, adding, and extracting resources (textures, patches, sprites, sounds) for just about any game type: DOOM (and all ports), QUAKE, HEXEN, UNREAL, HALF-LIFE, WOLFENSTEIN 3D and on and on. XWE edits everything that CAN be edited in the DOOM IWAD or any PWAD: Map Editor (with 3D wireframe preview), Image Editor, Texture Editor, Palette Editor, ColorMap Editor, 'Endoom' Editor, Script Editor/Compiler, Wave editor, Music viewer. The interface is simple but ingenious. When you load a WAD a simple list of all the entries is shown on the left. Click on an entry and the editing tool appears on the right. Its prime use is for manipulation of graphics - import, export, create, edit - especially when dealing with patches. Patches can be juxtaposed and positioned with great precision. XWE just about does away with converting graphics to RAW or lump formats and can insert your BMP (or LMP or RAW if you please) right into the WAD. It really is a DOOM Swiss Army Knife. In fact, it replaces just about every other graphic and sound tool I can think of. Thanks to Sarge Baldy for pointing this out to me. Updated 01.22.04 with many fixes and improvements.

XWE: LEVEL Editor

WinDEU32 v5.24 by Renaud Paquay.  DEU for Windows, basically, with no loss of features, many command-line options now menu driven, right-click for mode operations. Solid code, very good nodes builder built-in, intuitive interface. Actually much easier than DEU 5.21. I switch between this editor and Doom Builder for my levels. WinDEU is old, but reliable. You MUST edit the WINDEU.INI file to point to your DOOM directories. Good idea to read the documentation. (See the Tutorial page for my visual guide to using WinDEU.)

*WinDEU for Beginners: A Pictorial Guide by Dr Sleep is 91 pages long, lavishly illustrated with step-by-step in-editor screenshots, and fully explains the WinDEU interface, mouse and keyboard clicks and shortcuts needed to build a level, and a section on advanced functions like merging PWADs, importing/extracting raw lumps, and more. View online or download the tutorial as a Microsoft Word document, Adobe Acrobat PDF, or HTML format (self-extracting zip files). Version 1.1 of the guide has been completely revised and reformatted. Several new chapters (30 extra pages) have been added explaining the editor, plus chapters on building lifts and teleporters. The PDF version is optimized for high quality printing. Download Adobe Acrobat.

DETH v4.24 by Antony Burden and Simon Oke (w/Jim Flynn). An expanded version of DEU with many improvements, including HERETIC and HEXEN support. Also fully supports the extensions of the TNT BOOM engine. This used to be my editor of choice, and it now runs fullscreen in a DOS Window in Win95/98, but I'm running Windows 2000. Uses ZenNode as internal nodes builder.

ZETH v4.17  Specifically coded for ZDOOM. All the same features as DETH.

DEU v5.21GCC by Raphaël Quinet and Brendon J. Wyber.  The first and still the most reliable DOOM editor around. If you can get around the DOS mode and get it to run in XP or 2K, you're set. Command line support for grouping PWADs, building new IWADs, dumping, raw import, and more. Excellent documentation. This version only edits DOOM 1. (There were later betas, but this is the most solid version.) You MUST edit the DEU.INI file to point to your DOOM directories. Good idea to read the documentation. (See the Tutorial page for my visual guide to using WinDEU.)

DoomCAD v6.1 by Matt Tagliaferri.  Most popular Windows DOOM editor in its time - and still going strong from what I hear.

Why v0.99 by Jussi Pakkanen. Unusual new Windows editor with multiple operating windows (you have to arrange them on your desktop). Good documentation and fairly complete list of functions (similar to DEU) as with most map editors. Why has a complete scripting language to make your own add-ons, and requires Python to be installed. (You'll have to download this separately from the Python home page.) You can write your own configuration files and scripts for performing editing tasks. Has a RAW lump editor, tools and prefabs, and interactive texture alignment. Definitely worth a look.

The editors listed below have not been fully tested by me, but I like a list to be complete. Try them at your own risk. All edit DOOM and DOOM II. See notes for other support.

IDE v1.00.14 by Simply Silly Software. This is another hack of DEU, but a thoughtful one. Implementing all of DEU's features, but adding many more, including Quick Draw Sector Mode (just use the mouse to draw sectors instead of placing vertices), better texture alignment, plus HERETIC support.

  DOS

System Files This is a ZIP of common Windows files often needed by 3D editors and graphics tools. You may find them handy. They all go in the windows/system/ directory for WIN95/98/ME or the windows/system32/ directory for NT/2K/XP. Don't install or overwrite files unless the program you're using instructs you to. Included are CTL3DV2.DLL, VB3D.DLL, VBRUN300.DLL, CMDIALOG.VBX, KNIFE.VBX, MHAS200.VBX, MHSL200.VBX, SSDOCKTB.VBX, THREED.VBX.
