Hacking Tools

*WhackEd2 v0.50.168 by Dennis Meuwissen. Nice Windows hacker compatible with DeHacked files. Changes for properties like monster speed, sound associations and weapon behavior can be adjusted by hacking the DOOM.EXE. WhackEd2 does everything DHE does, but with a terrific Windows interface.  Updated 02.14.04

DeHacked v3.1 by Richard Ratayczak. The premier tool for editing the DOOM.EXE. Change Thing, Ammo, Weapon, and Frame tables to modify attributes of each: speed, number, etc. Can create stunning effects (and silly ones). Good documentation. Creates DEH files that modify your EXE, so back it up!

DHMERGE v1.1 by Alden Bates. Merges two DeHacked patches (DEH) into one.

D2 v4.2 by Stephen Crowley. Another EXE editor: "Edit Thing, Ammo, Weapon and Frame tables and create new evil monsters or modify old ones. Cyber demons that look like players, super-fast rockets, invisible troopers, rapid-fire weapons, Infinite Ammo, and more! A bunch of cool patches are included." For DOOM2 only.

COMPAT v1.1 by Stephen Crowley. Combines two D2 patches into one.

DOOM Text Edit v2.11 by Dylan Hicks. This interesting program allows you to make changes to the DOOM(1UD2).EXE file. It can edit the text data, variable markers, and all the cheat codes. The text data DTEDIT accesses is the data that DOOM uses when it displays game messages, error messages, and verification messages. It creates an entry table file (.ETF), which contains all of your changes, that you can load into the DOOM.EXE from the command line. Terrific for theme-based conversion projects.

DeHacker by Matt Fell. From the author of The Unofficial DOOM Specs, this ZIP includes the article Hacking the DOOM EXE plus 5 QBasic programs for printing various resources in the DOOM.EXE that are talked about in the article.

Other Tools

DM2CONV v3.2 by Vincenzo Alcamo. This is a great little program! it converts any PWAD from one game version to another: DOOM to DOOM II, DOOM to HERETIC, HERETIC to DOOM or II, and back. But more than that, it uses response files to specify texture (and other resource) changes. You could do mass texture and flat changes in your level, since DM2CONV also converts to the same format: i.e., D2 to D2, D to D, H to H, etc. As you know, DOOM crashes if it comes across an invalid texture name. I had a level that did this and I could not find the texture in an editor. Using DM2CONV I simply converted the problem texture to a valid one. Also does object substitution, resource renaming, LineDef/Sector types remapping, music/sound remapping, and more. Also comes with GFXMAKER which creates a texture WAD from any IWAD. Works with Ultimate DOOM. Excellent documentation, easy to use.

*PakScape v0.11 by Peter 'Riv' Engström. PakScape is a PAK/PK3/VOL explorer/creator for PK3 files used by jDOOM, QUAKE 2, and HALF-LIFE. Since PK3 files are really ZIP files it can also be used as a ZIP explorer/creator. Some of the main features: Multiple Document Interface, Explorer-like UI, drag & drop, import/export files and directories.

Wad Tools v1.0 by Jim Flynn. Suite of four programs: STRIP removes all but essential resources, reducing WAD to half-size; MERGE combines 2 single level PWADs into one; ANALYZE reports on the monster/ammo/health content of each level at each difficulty setting, shows various statistics on sectors and player starts; DUMP reports all the graphic level resources for each level in the WAD to text. Various parameters, read the docs.

CleanWAD v1.0b by Serge Smirnov. Reduces WAD size by sorting directory entries by type; eliminating any repeated and null entries, truncating WAV resources whose length exceeds their number of samples, rebuilding pictures and (optionally) BLOCKMAPs, lossless picture and BLOCKMAP compression/decompression (optional).

CLED v4.88 by Jim Flynn. CLED is a tool for patching or inspecting a DOOM level, without the side effects associated with opening and closing many editors. CLED will leave the current BLOCKMAP, NODES, and REJECT untouched. Since CLED runs from the DOS command line it is suitable for batch fixes to levels and wads.

Stuck v1.0  by Jim Flynn. small utility that searches all the levels in a DOOM or DOOM II .WAD for instances of poorly placed monsters and things. Can detect if objects are too close together, stuck in walls, squished in low sectors, etc.

Doom WAD File Manipulator V1.03 by Carl W. Moore. The WadMan is a DOOM PWAD utility that allows you to create and modify PWADs for ALL versions of DOOM. This program allows you to cut and paste resources out of many PWADs and IWADs, rename them if you want to, and group them together into one PWAD. Allows you to use all sprite patches made for DOOM  with DOOM2. Provides a simple way to convert all Levels made in DOOM (ExMx) to DOOM2 (MAPxx).

DOOM II Patch Utilities v1.2 by Jim Flynn. The patch utility consists of three executables, MAK, MER, and BRK. The first, MAK, constructs a .WAD file from a text control file and the raw resources it specifies. The second, MER, merges the resources of a second wad to a first to create a third combining the two. The BRK utility extracts some or all resources from a wad.

WADOpt v1.0 by Scott Earnest. Merges multiple WADs to different game formats (DOOM, DOOM II, HERETIC); optimizes WADs, removing null and redundant resources, therefore reducing their size. Also has SHOWDIR for viewing entries.
